E3 2009: Wii

Many great things are coming to the Wii: Super Mario Galaxy 2, Tales of Monkey Island, Metroid: Other M, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Yay!

Build-A-Bear Workshop: A Friend Fur All Seasons

build-a-bear_workshop_a_friend_fur_all_seasonsWe bought a new Wii game for the daughter today: Build-A-Bear Workshop: A Friend Fur All Seasons. I found it really cheap at a local store, and since the daughter really likes her Build-A-Bear I thought it would be worth a try.

A great thing about the game is that is has been translated into Danish, so she can play it on her own. It is a combination of dress-up and mini-games, where all the mini-games we have encountered so far are simple enough for a five-year-old to play. When you win the games you earn medals and unlock new items for the bears to wear. You can then spend the medals to purchase clothes for the bears.

So far she is very fond of the game, and it is going to take her some time complete all the levels.

Bit. Trip Beat

I just bought Bit. Trip Beat for the Wii, and it is great if you have five minutes to kill. It is in no way advanced, but it has solid gameplay that is somewhat like Pong. I won’t try to explain it, but just say that you should go see a video review of it.

Wii Firmware 4.0

Nintendo has released a new version of the firmware for the Wii. With this new version it finally becomes possible to run Wiiware and Virtual Console games directly from and SD card – and the Wii now also accepts SDHC cards for up to 32GB of extra storage.

Of course the firmware also included the obligatory fixes to disable any homebrew hacks people may have installed. But as usual it is only a matter of time before the Wii is open for homebrew again.

Guitar Hero: World Tour

I got the last of my Christmas presents today… My wife had ordered Guitar Hero: World Tour for me – and it just took a really, really long time to arrive.

So ROCK ON!

World of Goo

Today World of Goo was released in Europe as WiiWare. I just bought it and played through the first four levels, and I must say it is an absolutely brilliant little puzzle game. In some ways it reminds me of Lemmings in that you have to get things (in this case goo balls) from point A to point B by traversing various obstacles. However what sets World of Goo apart is the really great physics model – it is just plain fun to build towers and bridges out of goo balls.

So if you like puzzle games go and buy it.

Tetris Party

On Friday Tetris Party was released as WiiWare. Go buy it now. You need it.

This has been a public service announcement.

Super Smash Bros Brawl

My copy of Super Smash Bros Brawl arrived in the mail today – right on schedule. I haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but the initial impression is that this is a huge game, and it looks to be great fun – both in single player and multi player mode.

Super Smash Bros Brawl has failed to work on some Wiis but even though mine is quite old everything appears to works just fine.

Mario Strikers Charged Football

I found Mario Strikers Charged Football yesterday at half price – so I had to buy it…

It is a quite fun football (soccer) game with the Mario characters. In some ways it reminds me of Speedball. I am sure it is a lot of fun to play in two player mode but I have to go out and buy another Nunchuck to try it out.

All in all I recommend the game – if you can find it at half price.

WiiWare

WiiWare has been launched in Europe. And I have bought my first game: Lost Winds. It is a fun little platform game that has a nice way to use the wiimote and nunchuck. I have only played it for ten minutes but it seems to be a really solid game.
